We thought we had seen all temperatures in previous editions of the Michel Gouin Ultramarathon. However we were forced to acknowledge that it was not the case. With terrible conditions we held, on Saturday and Sunday 16th and 17th May, the 06-24 hours of Drummondville, at the Claude Béland track. The rain, wind, and the cold annoyed not only the runners, several runners having suffered considerably from hypothermia and cramps, but also the organizers, who at a certain time, thought of stopping the competition. Indeed, around 3:00 am in the morning on Sunday, the tents tried to leave with the wind. If that, which was protecting the volunteers marking the turns for our runners, had not held, that would have meant the end for Michel Gouin, having alternated between the role of participant and volunteer during the event. I occupied myself marking the turns when the gusts of wind developed.
On the sporting level, the 06 hours crowned Ghislaine Beaulieu of St Bruno, with 48,02km, in the women and Sylvain Croteau de Kingsey Falls 45,05km, with its first experiment in ultramarathon, at the men. In the 24 hour, the men’s victory went to Eric Deshaies, with 181.8km of Gatineau, who is a ultratriathlète. Deshaies became the 24 hour Ultramarathon Champion of Quebec 2009 and it was deserved, in addition to the cut, a purse of $50. It preceded Sylvain Bernier 172,1km of Kingsey Falls. On the womens side, the first position went to Charlotte Vasarhelyi, of Breslau, Ontario. There with the second rank, we find Manon Jacob of Lake the Tortoise with 126,3km. Thus, it became Championne – ULTRAMARATHON QUEBEC the 24 hour old 2009, and obviously deserved a purse of $ 50.
IN SHORT: several recruits made their debut in Ultramarathon, at the 06 hours, note: Joelle Hébert of St Helene de Kamouraska, Marie Eve Gendron de Sherbrooke, and Sylvain Croteau de Kingsey Falls. At the 24 hours: Mario Gélinas of Tuque, Nathalie Dumais of St Helene de Kamouraska, Carl Giroux of German St of Grantham, Eric Deshaies de Gatineau, Marc Jobin de Chibougamau, and Karl Beauchamp of Seven Island. During the week end, we were happy to have with us Mr. Marcel Jobin, Olympic ex-walker, called the `INSANE IN PIJAMA’, friend of Mario Gélinas. Michel Gouin partially took part in the 24 hours race and covered just over 85km and Tommy Gouin made 25,7km at the 06 hours.

Ultramarathon Michel Gouin :
La pluie, le vent, et le froid volent la vedette !
(Drummondville, le 18 Mai 2009). Nous pensions avoir tout vu au niveau température lors des éditions précédentes de l’Ultramarathon Michel Gouin. Forcé de constater que ce n’était le cas. Par un temps exécrable, et le mot est faible, s’est tenu, les Samedi et Dimanche 16-17 Mai, les 06-24 heures de Drummondville, à la piste Claude Béland. La pluie, le vent, et le froid ont considérablement ennuyé les coureurs, plusieurs coureurs ayant souffert d’hypothermie et de crampes, mais également les organisateurs, qui à un certain moment, ont pensé arrêter la compétition. En effet, autour de 3h00 du matin, dimanche, des tentes partaient au vent. Si celle, protégeant les bénévoles marquant les tours de nos coureurs n’avait tenu, cela aurait signifié la fin, de mentionner Michel Gouin, ayant alterné entre le rôle de participant et de bénévole durant l’évènement. Je m’occupais de marquer des tours quand les bourrasques de vent se sont amplifiées.
Sur le plan sportif, le 06 heures a couronné Ghislaine Beaulieu de St Bruno, une habituée avec 48,02km, chez les femmes et Sylvain Croteau de Kingsey Falls 45,05km, à son première expérience en ultramarathon, chez les hommes.
Du côté du 24 heures, la victoire chez les hommes est allée à Eric Deshaies, avec 181.8km de Gatineau, surtout un ultratriathlète. Du coup, Deshaies est devenu champion – ULTRAMARATHON QUÉBEC des 24 heures 2009, et s’est mérité, en plus de la coupe, une bourse de $ 50. Il a devancé Sylvain Bernier 172,1km de KIngsey Falls. Du côté féminin, la première position est allée à Charlotte Vasarhelyi, de Breslau, Ontario. Au deuxième rang, nous retrouvons Manon Jacob de Lac là la Tortue avec 126,3km. Ainsi, elle est devenue Championne – ULTRAMARATHON QUÉBEC des 24 heures 2009, et évidemment s’est méritée une bourse de $ 50.

Pendant le week end, nous avons eu le bonheur d’avoir parmi nous M. Marcel Jobin, ex-marcheur olympique, surnommé le ‘FOU EN PIJAMA’, ami de Mario Gélinas.
Michel Gouin a partiellement participé à la course du 24 heures et effectué un peu plus de 85KM et Tommy Gouin a fait 25,7km aux 06 heures.
