Benjamin Timoner after walking across the USA in 2011 and raising over $26,000 for The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, has decided to walk again in 2013 only this time he will be walking there and back.
Having lost his father to Pancreatic Cancer when he was only 5 years old, Benjamin notes on his website that research into Pancreatic Cancer has made little headway in recent years and the survival rates for people who have the condition are not great. His website says that for patients with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis:
1)The one year survival rate is 25%.
2)The five year survival rate is a mere 6%.
3)Although the fourth largest cancer killer in this country, pancreatic cancer receives a mere 2% of federal cancer funding.
4)Most devastating of all, the survival rates have not changed in forty years.
Timoner will set off from Santa Monica, CA to Long Island, NY on Jan 2nd 2013 and then will return Westward along a Southern course from Tybee Island, GA back to Santa Monica, some 5800 miles in 2013.
Follow Benjamin’s progress as he prepares and starts this mammoth journey in the New Year.
