OKEECHOBEE -Despite hot and humid conditions, two new course records were  set this weekend in the third annual Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail 118-Mile Endurance Run held Saturday morning, a counterclockwise circumnavigation of the lake footrace that begins and ends at Okeechobee’s Okie-Tante Campground.Garth Peterson, 46, of Hinesville, Georgia finished in 21 hours, 52 minutes, 25 seconds to break the previous record of 25:28:00  set by Ontario, Canada’s John Turner. Alissa Springman, 34, of Mercersville, Pennsylvania finished second in a women’s course-record time of 24:45:15, breaking the old record of 27:21:59 held by Sharon Zelinski of Toronto by more than two hours.Sebastian’s Joe Ninke, 39, and the defending champion, finished third in 26:13:04, twelve minutes off last year’s winning time.Nine out of 16 runners to start the race finished it, a record number of finishers.Five of eleven starters finished the inaugural race, and five of 15 starters finished last year.Runners were plagued for the second year in a row by hot temperatures, sunny skies, and higher-than-normal humidity levels, which made running throughout Saturday afternoon and into Sunday more difficult than usual. The course is run on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike that surrounds Lake Okeechobee, and begins with 34 miles of rough two-track dirt-and-rock road from Okeechobee around to Moore Haven. From Moore Haven around through Clewiston, SouthBay, Pahokee, Canal Point, Port Mayaca, and back to the finish line, the course is a flat, wide, smooth paved surface ideal for running.Runners from Virginia, Georgia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida and Germany participated in the event.
