– over 90 kilometres, 5000m positive elevation gain, 24 hours maximum –
The North Face reconfirms its commitment as technical sponsor for the renowned Lavaredo Ultra Trail in the heart of the Dolomites. Starting at midnight on Friday 26th June this over 90km ultra race is a true test of endurance. With 5000m of positive elevation gain and a time limit of 24 hours over tough technical terrain, the race has a special place in the Italian trail running calendar and is fast becoming an internationally recognised classic.
Over tough technical mountain terrain, the race is a challenge for every competitor, requiring high-level physical and mental fitness. The mountain area through which the route passes is very dry. So, although there are four ‘support’ points where solid food and liquids are provided, the race is also a challenge in terms of ‘self-management’ and ‘self-sufficiency’ and runners will need to draw on their experience and skill in managing their food and water intake over long distances. Competitors must also be prepared for hours of running in darkness, with the race starting at midnight (full moon in 2010). But the sleepless night is made worthwhile as runners experience the incredible beauty of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo at sunrise.
Keith Byrne, Senior Strategic and Trade Marketing Manager of The North Face EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), participated in last year’s race, “It was only 60km last year – and that was tough – so I can’t imagine just how tough the 2010 route will be over the 90km distance.’ He goes on to say, ‘The Lavaredo Ultra Trail is in an awesome location – this area of the Dolomites is one of the classic mountain locations of the world. We are glad to be sponsoring this event – we want people to have the chance to experience such a classic running moment’.
In its support of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail, The North Face is continuing its commitment to creating a network of European ultra-trail races of which The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc is the ‘showcase’. The North Face is supporting some of the toughest endurance challenges in the world – attracting some of the most respected endurance athletes in the world. But beyond this The North Face is committed to encouraging everyone to find their own opportunity to explore. True endurance – in part it is the physical preparation to ‘go the distance’ and in part it is the mental attitude to believe that you can go even further. Endurance embodies the philosophy of The North Face – to ‘Never Stop Exploring’. In the Lavaredo Ultra Trail – for all the competitors, volunteers and supporters, the race becomes an opportunity to participate in an incredible experience together. Each runner is challenged to explore to their limits and to become part of something that is so much more than just their race.
