Last weekend I went to the Tooting Bec Athletics track to help out at the Self-Transcendence 24 hour race. The field was full several months before the event and the dropout rate was very low.
Some interesting runners had signed up and as the race unfolded the early players who set the pace included Paul Fernandez who forged a several mile lead over Paul Hart who eventually retook the lead only to be overtaken by the eventual winner Richard Quennell just before hour 17.
In the ladies race, Jane Riley took an early lead but was soon overtaken by Aileen Scott before 6 hours and was chased by Elisabeth Karlsson who stayed close until the end.
Standard of performance was high as 25 of the 45 starters reached 100 miles or more.
