The Last Annual Heart Of The South 2024 is underway, starting yesterday, June 13th in North Carolina. Runners have 10.5 days to find their way back to the start at Castle Rock, Georgia.
The course changes every year and runners assembled on Wednesday morning (June 12th), parked their vehicles in a hayfield atop Sand Mountain in north Georgia, and boarded tour buses. The only thing they knew about their destination is that it would be between 300 and 350 miles away (or maybe 384 miles). Once they arrived, they received a map of the course they take to get them back to their vehicles. After an overnight stay in a hotel, the field was bused to the start the yesterday morning, where runners filled vials of water to take on their journey to the Rock.
