Today is probably the biggest event on the US running calendar with the advent of the 2011 New York City Marathon – best wishes to all those gathering on Staten Island.
However in two weeks the New York City Ultramarathon takes place in Central Park on November 19th – the 34th Annual Knickerbocker 60K. Usually has a smaller field than its shorter brother but then those extra 18 km define the word ultrarunning for New Yorkers.
The race has a great history and traditionally has been held in conjunction with BUS – the Broadway Ultra Society, most notably fronted by Richie Innamorato.
The Knickerbocker 60K, (37.2 miles) on March 11, 1978, was the first BUS race. It was held at Central Park in conjunction with the NYRRC. The name Knickerbocker signifies the metro area. Aptly, Terry Knickerbocker won it in 3:51. Four years later he set a 3:40 U.S. record.
The race starts at 8:00 am at East 90th and after a short out and back section involves 9 laps of Central Park.
