Subject: Final results of the Peanut Island Races
Hello All –
Final results of all three fixed-time races – the 6-hour, the 12-hour, and the 24-hour – are now posted at www.peanutisland24.com. The race took place on historic and scenic Peanut Island, located in the Intracoastal Waterway off the shores of West Palm Beach, Florida. The 24-hour started at 10:00 AM on the 31st, and finished at 10:00 AM on New Year’s Day.
We had some dramatic late-night and early-morning racing, as the midrace 24-hour favorite, Keith Straw, showed how easily plans can go awry. He ran into stomach issues as he neared the 100-mile mark, and Canadian Dave Carver smelled the blood and revved up his running to cruise past Keith and run away with the men’s title with 116-plus miles. Rick Myers, a midrace contender who dropped out of the top three for a while recovered nicely and posted a 113-plus mile performance for second place. Brad Compton took advantage of the early-morning carnage to slip into third place with 107-plus miles. Keith ended up with 101-plus miles and fifth place.
In the women’s race, Bonnie Busch from the Davenport, Iowa area showed how to execute a race plan to perfection as she outlasted everyone else to win the women’s title with 103-plus miles, good for fourth place overall.
Bonnie passed second-place women’s finisher Stephanie Robinson, who notched a personal-best of 101-plus miles, in the final two laps of the certified 1.234-mile loop course. Sue Ellen Trapp, 64 years young and a veteran
ultrarunner and holder of at least 11 standing national and age-group records, finished third with 91-plus miles. Sue Ellen’s total mileage surpasses the American Women’s Age 60-64 24-Hour record shown on the American Ultrarunning Association’s website, and since this race was both USATF sanctioned as well as USATF course-certified, we will be contacting the AUA about the process of ratifying Sue Ellen’s possible age group record.
A total of 10 out of 46 24-hour runners surpassed the 100-mile mark, which is a testament to the talent, the venue, and the race organization that Race Director Bob Becker put into this first-time event. I have a Financial
Interest in this race since I provided the computer timing, scoring and results services.
Sincerely,
Mike Melton
