With a light misty rain and 70f nighttime temps., race leader Kobe o. Running shirtless and fast. In his wake are some hurting runners, several of whom in this reporter’s opinion went out too aggressively.
I walked some with ed e., who was suffering from the #1 injury of long ultras–shin and ti bialis pain. I offered what help I could and made sure his feet were elevated when he went to sleep. This being a race, it seemed the moment ed went off Kobe, Ananda l. And others started throwing in fast laps.
And it gets worse for the Americans. The great Dipali c. Is a last minute scratch due to lingering illness. Fred davis had to leave due to a family emergency back in Ohio. 6 day veteran Barbara s z p e t h y. Is also a last minute scratch.
But always-steady Yolanda h. Is not slowing or stopping at all. When I left at midnight she was power walking with the great sarah Barnett of Australia (as an aside, sarah is one of at least three former professional models in the race ).
Your reporter spent over an hour at dr. Ari. The chiropractor today and hopefully my back will hold up.
I was inspired by a wonderful concert near the race at which recording artists Kristin Hoffman, p.r. tubbs and others played some haunting yet uplifting tunes from Prince. There is not an athlete at the race– be theyv from Russia, India, italy, brasil, or mars who has not been humming a tune of his or talking about his passing.
The runners and helpers and spectators are one big family supporting and cheering each other, in a way that does not happen in shorter ultras.
“How can we not talk about family When family’s all we got?”
(Refrain heard at race, from Charlie Puth and whizz khalifa )
