The first Ultra Trail Mount Fuji 2012 has been won by Julian Chorier and Neria Martinez. The two categories that comprise the event are a 156km race, Ultra Trail Mount Fuji and an 82 km race, Shizuoka to Yamanashi, that take place over the weekend 18-20 May 2012. The UTMF course is a loop around Mount Fuji, an active volcano and a sacred centre for many Japanese people, on forest and mountain trails. Originally scheduled for 2011 but delayed due to the tragedy that befell Japan last year with the devasting Tsunami that continues to have a serious impact on the nation today.
Several top class runners were on the entry list including Hal Koerner, Mike Wolfe from the USA and Sebastien Chaigneau from France. Runners are still coming in as I write and there is live video of the finish line available on the race website.
