With the end in sight for the lead runners in this years Self-Transcendence 3100 mile race in New York, progress has been halted due to the severe heat conditions prevailing in New York at this time.
Race Director Rupantar La Russo has posted on the 3100 Race Blog that the race would be postponed for 24 hours on the 23rd of July and would resume on the 24th due to the record temperatures. In view of the conditions two extra days will be allowed – ie. 54 days instead of 52 days.
Asprihanal Aalto had been leading the race with some 50 miles of cushion and was setting a new best streak of consecutive days over 70 miles when it appears that the heat proved too much for his body and he was taken to hospital where he was given an IV. Asprihanal returned to the course next day but with the persistent record heat and humidity, he was unable to perform at his usual level. It is no surprise that in the face of sustained heat advisories and conditions in Queens that the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team decided that after 41 days of running it was in the interests of the health and safety of the runners to postpone the race for 24 hours.
Earlier this week, on Day 37, after struggling with injury for a long time,German runner Purna-Samarpan Querhammer withdrew from his third 3100 mile race.
