The coldest marathon in the world
Christian Schiester on the run at the “Antarctic Ultra Race” at the South Pole. apa |
Snow and ice and a temperature of -20 degrees centigrade.
“Its for fame and the adventure and the fight with nature.”
“Wiener Zeitung”: Tell me about the “Antarctic Ultra Race” which you recently won. You have said the race, which you won in 19 hours and 58 minutes, was the longest day in your life. Tell me about it.
Christian Schiester: The 100 kilometer race was on December 20th. The start was in Patriot Hills just a few hundred miles from the South Pole. Nineteen men were in the race, but I was the only one who could finish it.
There was a snow storm and it was very cold. The snow was very soft and when that is the case you need strong power in your muscles to finish the long distance. The wind was also very strong. But I had the best training and best equipment, so I think that’s why I won.
What are some other races you have run in?
In 2003 I was in the Marathon des Sables in Morocco. That was a 243 kilometer race over a period of six days. 700 runners competed and I came in 12th place.
In 2004 I was at the Himalaya Stage Race of 162 kilometers which took place in India and Nepal. I won that race.
In 2006 I took part in a Jungle Marathon in Brazil and came in third place.
