Dear Runners and Adventurers:
There are approximately two weeks left to register for a free entry to The Coastal Challenge, the World’s Expedition Run, in Costa Rica. You can still sign up online at Trail Runner magazine by January 3, 2007. The winner will be announced on January 4, and all other entries will go back into the pot for the second and final drawing on June 30, 2007.
The winner of the January 4 drawing will choose between free entry to the February 2007 or 2008 races. You can find more about The Coastal Challenge online or in the January 2007 issue of Trail Runner magazine (on newstands until Jan. 30, 2007.)
The Coastal Challenge will continue taking registrations for the upcoming race until January 15, 2007, or the 125 runner cap is reached — whichever comes first.
Excerpts from the “Take Your Mark” page (p. 19) of Trail Runner magazine by Elinor Fish include:
“This is one race the family won’t mind tagging along for. As runners spend each day pounding the dirt, spouses and kids can enjoy guided adventure tour packages including whitewater rafting, horseback riding, zip lining and hiking.
“Now in its third year, The Coastal Challenge will take place in the country’s exotic northwest region. The six-day “Route of Fire” has individual racers and three-person teams run past active volcanoes, inland lakes, over windswept highlands and through tropical dry forests and hot, humid jungles filled with fragrant flora and screaming howler monkeys.
“Runners start at La Fortuna, a town at the base of Arenal Volcano. Expedition runners cover between 19 and 30 miles daily, while adventure runners travel roughly half the distance, finishing at Bahia Salinas, a beachside resort town.
“Periodic checkpoints offer refreshments and competitors’ personal items are transported to each night’s camping location. Runners spend afternoons resting weary feet, mingling with competitors from around the globe and feasting on a colorful array of Tico (Costa Rican) fare, including plantains, gallo pinto (rice and beans), ceviche (fish) and tarrillada (beefsteak).”
this would be a wonderful holiday and a great adventure for me
