The Last Annual Vol State Road Race is a 500 km nonstop race acroos Tennessee starting at Dorena Landing in Missouri and finishing at Castle Rock just inside Georgia.
There are no aid stations. Runners are crewed or self-crewed (screwed) and participants have to find their own food, water and shelter. They have 10 days to complete the distance. If a runner decides to stop for any reason there is usually (not always) a ride to civilisation. There are cut-offs, known affectionately as Oprah and personified as moving at the average pace required to finish within the time limit. Tombstones mark the map (see link below) where a participant failed to make it to a specified point in time.
As I write this Francesca has probably finished and the Ultralist is waiting with baited breath to see if a woman will be King of The Road again.
Update: Indeed, I was right, Francesca Muccini wins The 2017 Last Annual Vol State Road Race in 4d 04:18:05.
