Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race 2017 – Daily Updates – Day 19

Daily Diary
Thursday 6th July

Another good day for running, cool morning, never getting too warm and a little cloud cover, but sunny evening and cool night time. All day it threatened to rain but it never came.
However only 1 runner bettered 65 miles and most had a below par day.
Also the first sign of “injuries” real or imaginary.
In Harita’s case it was a sore shin and ankle. In Sergey’s case it was not so clear, leg or head!!. After a great few days from a slow start he was back in the mix. But this was such a low day he will not be able to have another. Complaining of leg problem but Vasu again had most laps and extending his lead over Nirbhasa. Kaneenika is the leading women and third overall but the joint best performance of the day goes to Harita (100 laps) and Yolanda (105 laps) , who although not making the 109, both overcame their difficulties and kept themselves in the game.

However the atmosphere quietened as late in the evening word came that William Schiel’s wife, Elizabeth had very quickly lost her battle with cancer and died peacefully at 11:25 pm UK time.
There was an air of shock, but also an air of energy to give strength to Wiiliam and his family at this sad time.

Personally I have known Elizabeth since 2004, and shared many telephone conversations as she relayed news from their beloved Island of Sanday, to many race venues throughout the World. William always says it is a team effort and although Elizabeth only went to a handful of his races, she was the backbone and glue that has made “Team Sichel ” so successful.
