From Heidi Finniff, Spring North Coast 24 Race Director:
” Here is the announcement that everyone has been patiently waiting for regarding Spring NC24. There will NOT be a 2014 Spring NC24. This decision was made for several reasons. The IAU is trying to establish a consistent schedule for the World Championship races. This being, 24 Hour Worlds in the Spring and the 100K in the Fall. In order to pick the most appropriate US National Team for the 24 hour race we need to also consistently schedule the National Championship in the Fall. Luckily we already have the Fall NC24 race to host this event.
Also, for the Spring NC24 to really grow into a self sustaining and successful event we’d need to move it into May for better weather. The month of May already has plenty of existing reputable 24 hour events occurring. While the popularity of 24 hour events is growing it remains a very small community of runners who will be racing in May. Adding our race to the May schedule would most likely take runners away from existing races.
I would rather take the energy, effort, and funding that we’d spend putting on the Spring NC24 and plan to host the World Championship in the next few years. The IAU would also like to see the World Championship come to the US. And if for some reason, like in 2012, that the need arises for a Spring National Championship we could easily bring Spring NC24 back. Until then I’d like to focus on helping to support the continued success of the Fall NC24 and bringing Worlds to Cleveland.”
