Everest Sky Race: Hawker vs Rai, duel on the paths of heaven
The platoon of Everest Sky Race (235 km, 11,000 m, 7000 m in 9 steps)
arrived yesterday in the Khumbu. The ascent of the formidable Tashi LAPSA
(5755 m) was possible and the Everest Sky-racers have left the valley
centuries of Rolwaling, one of the new course and a 2011
place “Terra Incognita”. “It was a big day, says Sylvain
Bazin, currently seventh in the standings. The riders crossed the Tashi
Lapse, the collar never crossed most engaged in a race in Nepal. This
passing has left its mark on organisms. “Currently at the top of
Gokyo Ri (5350 m), the competitors have just completed the seventh stage. “A
long and difficult step, says Sylvain, live from Gokyo. Because it
had chained the passage of the Renjo (5340 m) and the ascent of Gokyo Ri
(5350 m). Runners continued to arrive at the top ….”
Altius Altius Altius is the motto of the Everest Sky Race. Since its
inception in 2003, the organizers are in the logic of “always
above “. 2011 was no exception to this philosophy with the rise of
Tashi LAPS (5755 m). Collar “mixed” ice and snow where the strings
fixed were installed to climb with crampons and helmet
Climbing for runners. In this universe Himalayan Lizzy Hawker is
in his element. Let us not forget that prior to the triple winner
UTMB version 100 miles, 2006 World Champion in the 100 km (7 h 29’12) and
World record holder for 24 hours on the road (247.076 km), English was
mountaineering and practiced the “ski mountaineering”. In particular, it made
a first in the Indian Himalayas with the ascent to the ski Kalanag (6387
m) in 2003. In 2004, it was the Mount Waddington (4016 m) in Colombia
UK, in 2005, crossing the Kackar Range in Turkey and in 2006,
the Ak-Shirak Range in Kyrgyzstan, the western end of
the Himalayas.
After seven steps, Lizzy Hawker was always at the top of Everest Sky
Race to the top of Gokyo Ri (5340 m). But as stated Sylvain Bazin:
“During this stage, the riders Nepalese have gained the upper hand on Lizzy.
Deepak Rai and Rai Jorba have pushed hard this morning, departing from Thame to
try to fill the gap left by Lizzy. On arrival at Gokyo, Deepak
had a clear advantage that allowed him to get close to 8 minutes of
the great English general … “There are still two steps to Nepal
to dethrone the “Queen Elizabeth”, a total of 55 km (2200 m, –
2350 m). Two stages and two mountain finishes: Lobuche (4910 m),
Wednesday and Amadablam Base Camp (4,570 m) on Thursday. But also the neck of Cho
La (5450 m) and Kala Pattar (5540 m). The stage tomorrow, Wednesday,
risk of capital. 25 km long (900, -750), it will run
for 20 km to over 5000 m!
The race is not just a duel between Lizzy Hawker, Deepak Rai and
Jorba Rai. Point behind the French Emmanuel Remy (fourth) and Pascal
Beaury Sherpa (5th), Peter Osterwalder of Switzerland (6th), French Sylvain
Bazin (7th) and Britain’s Peter Bull (8e). When pointing to Gokyo
Ri, the other competitors were in the race … Note, however, the
abandonment of Alain and Didier Blactot Rageau. Outstanding against
altitude, they turned back before Tashi Laspi. Their condition is
not serious, and Alain Didier walking back to Kathmandu, with
assistance of the organization: Great Mountain Holidays. “Alain is already

Everest Sky Race : Hawker vs Raï, duel sur les Chemins du Ciel
Le peloton de l’Everest Sky Race (235 km, +11.000 m, -7.000 m en 9 étapes)
est arrivé, hier, dans le Khumbu. La redoutable ascension du Tashi Lapsa
(5.755 m) a été possible et les Everest Sky-racers ont pu quitté la vallée
séculaire de la Rolwaling, l’une des nouveauté du parcours 2011 et un
endroit ” Terra Incognita “. ” Ce fut une énorme journée, raconte Sylvain
Bazin, actuellement 7e au classement. Les coureurs ont franchi le Tashi
Lapsa, le col le plus engagé jamais franchi dans une course au Népal. Ce
passage a laissé des traces sur les organismes. ” Actuellement au sommet du
Gokyo Ri (5.350 m), les concurrents viennent de terminer la 7e étape. ” Une
étape longue et difficile, rapporte Sylvain, en direct de Gokyo. Car il a
fallu enchaîner le passage du Renjo La (5.340 m) et l’ascension du Gokyo Ri
(5.350 m). Les coureurs continuent d’arriver au sommet….”
Altius, altius, altius est la devise de l’Everest Sky Race. Depuis sa
création en 2003, les organisateurs sont dans cette logique du ” toujours
plus haut “. 2011 n’a pas dérogé à cette philosophie avec l’ascension du
Tashi Lapsa (5.755 m). Un col ” mixte ” de glace et de neige où des cordes
fixes ont été installées pour une ascension avec crampons et casque
d’escalade pour les coureurs. Dans cet univers himalayen, Lizzy Hawker est
dans son élément. N’oublions pas qu’avant d’être la triple vainqueur de
l’UTMB version 100 miles, championne du Monde 2006 du 100 km (7 h 29’12) et
recordwoman du Monde des 24 heures sur route (247,076 km), l’Anglaise a été
alpinisme et pratiquée le ” ski-mountaineering “. Elle a notamment réalisé
une première dans l’Himalaya Indien avec l’ascension à ski du Kalanag (6.387
m) en 2003. En 2004, ce fut le Mount Waddington (4 016 m) en Colombie
britannique; en 2005, la traversée du Kackar Range en Turquie et en 2006,
celle de Ak-Shirak Range au Kyrgyzstan, l’extrémité occidental de
l’Himalaya.
Après sept étapes, Lizzy Hawker était toujours en tête de l’Everest Sky
Race, au sommet du Gokyo Ri (5.340 m). Mais comme le précise Sylvain Bazin :
” Durant cette étape, les coureurs Népalais ont repris le dessus sur Lizzy.
Deepak Raï et Jorbir Raï ont attaqué fort ce matin, au départ de Thame pour
essayer de combler l’écart creusé par Lizzy. A l’arrivée à Gokyo, Deepak
avait un net avantage qui lui a permis de se rapprocher à 8 minutes de la
fantastique Anglaise au général…” Il reste encore deux étapes aux Népalais
pour détrôner the ” Queen Elizabeth “, soit un total de 55 km (+2200 m, –
2350 m). Deux étapes et deux arrivées en altitude : Lobuché (4.910 m),
mercredi et l’Amadablam Base Camp (4.570 m), jeudi. Mais aussi le col de Cho
La (5.450 m) et le Kala Pattar (5.540 m). L’étape de demain, mercredi,
risque d’être capitale. Longue de 25 km (+900, -750), elle va se courir
pendant 20 km à plus de 5000 m !
La course ne se résume pas à un duel entre Lizzy Hawker, Deepak Raï et
Jorbir Raï. Derrière eux pointent les Français Emmanuel Rémy (4e) et Pascal
Beaury Sherpa (5e), le Suisse Peter Osterwalder (6e), le Français Sylvain
Bazin (7e) et le Britannique Peter Bull (8e). Au moment du pointage à Gokyo
Ri, les autres concurrents étaient en course… A noter cependant, les
abandons d’Alain Blactot et de Didier Rageau. En souffrance face à
l’altitude, ils ont fait demi-tour avant le Tashi Laspa. Leur état étant
sans gravité, Alain et Didier reviennent en marchant à Kathmandu, avec
l’assistance de l’organisation : Great Mountain Holidays. ” Alain est déjà à
Dolakha et il arrivera à Kathmandu, demain, en bus, explique Dev Dongol,
l’un des responsables de GMH. Didier redescend également à pied. Il est
parti ce matin de Beding. Il sera à Kathmandu, vendredi… ” Pour les 28
autres Everest Sky-racers , la course continue… Altius, Altius, Altius…
