One of only two current 24 hour races in the UK at this time, the Self-Transcendence 24 hour race was founded by [[Ongkar Tony Smith]] of the Sri Chinmoy Athletics Club in 1989 and has run every year apart from 1993 and 2002. Ongkar Smith passed away in March 2006 and the job of maintaing  the high standards fell to his eldest daughter Shankara Smith.
