Because of the difficulty of long races, refreshments and supplies are a necessity at some point during the race. Aid stations provide drinks, food possibly a drop bag medical treatment/supplies and most important, human contact. Some aid stations have regular crews that return year after year and bring tremendous energy and enthusiasm for the runners as they pass through, Western States is one example.
