Scott Jurek, born in 1973, has been primarily a trail runner and is the course record holder and consecutive seven-time champion of the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run and the course record holder and defending two-time champion of the Badwater Ultramarathon labelled as "the toughest footrace on earth". In 2006 he ran the famous Spartathlon race for the first time and after a battle with Japanese ultrarunner Sekiya Ryoichi became only the second person ever to finish under 24 hours with a time of 22:52:18
