One of only two current 24 hour races in the UK at this time, the Self-Transcendence 24 hour race was founded by Ongkar Tony Smith of the Sri Chinmoy Athletics Club in 1989 and has taken place every year apart from 1993 and 2002. Ongkar Smith passed away in March 2006 and the job of maintaining the high standards fell to his eldest daughter, Shankara Smith, now the managing director of Run & Become.
The race usually takes place in the first or second week of October at The Tooting Bec track in South London. Event limit is about 45 runners and counting is done with the aid of students of Sri Chinmoy. The race has an excellent reputaion and is one of the last opportunities for European 24 hour runners to qualify for the following years international teams.
