The Athens Ultra Festival began as the 24 Hour Loutraki Ultra Festival in Greece in 2005. The event, directed by Costas Baxevanis, took place at Theodin Stadium on March 11th and was won by Hungarian ultrarunner Edit Berces. In 2006 the first Athens International Festival took place with 6/12/24 hour events and a seven day race. Due to earthquake damage a new venue was found outside of Loutraki at the Sportskamp complex. The race was won by Vlastimil Dvoracek from the Czech Republic. In 2007 the race moved to its current location on the site of the re-purposed Ellinikon International Airport. In 2010, a 1000 mile race was held - the first for several years and in 2011 was replaced with a 1000 km event also unique on the ultrarunning calendar.
