The 10th Athens International Ultramarathon Festival gets underway on March 23rd with the start of the 6 Day race.
The event takes place on the site of the old Athens airport, which is shortly to be redeveloped, on a 1 km loop. This year the course will take place in the Olympic games hockey stadium (as in 2009) which is located 300m north from the venue of last year.
Second place finisher last year, Nikitas Nomikos, returns and is the favourite to take top spot but he is likely to be challenged by the experienced Walter Zimmerman who has a pb of 651 km. Brazilian Alex Penna also returns seeking to improve on last years performance of 568 km. Germany’s Martina Haussman is the only female entrant this year.
The Athens International Ultramarathon Festival 2015 also features a 72 hour event, a 48 hour event and a 24 hour which is a national team selector for the world 24 hour championships and brings together the best Greek ultrarunners of that class and a great atmosphere is created the final night of the festival.
Organisers
The race is organised by Constantin Baxevanis, a Scientific Director at the Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy Center at Saint Savas Hospital in Athens.
