Yukon Arctic Ultra April
2006 Newsletter
Helly everyone,
YUKON ARCTIC ULTRA 2007 NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATIONS!
The 5th edition of the world?s coldest and toughest ultra will
start on February 11th, 2007. Once again, the start will be in Whitehorse,
the capital of the Canadian Yukon Territory. Since this YAU will
start one day after the Yukon Quest sled dog race the athletes of
the YAU will get the special treat of being able to witness this
great adventure with Siberian and Alaskan Huskies taking off into
the wilderness.
New in 2007: experienced athletes will get the chance to enter
the 460 mile race which leads all the way from Whitehorse to Dawson
City. Apart from that there will be the marathon, 100 and 300 mile
distances. Possible disciplines are running, mountain biking, xc-skiing
and skijoring.
Since the Canadian Winter Games will start shortly after the 300
mile race is over, we strongly recommend athletes to enter the race
and make hotel and flight bookings as soon as possible. The 460
mile race will not be as affected by the Winter Games because it
will finish in Dawson City. However, it is still a good idea to
book flights early.
Shelley Gellatly and David Berridge first entrants for
the YAU 2007
Well, those who thought Shelley will no only focus on organising
races were wrong. She just sent me an email and signed up for the
460 miles of the YAU 2007. I guess the temptation to also master
this great challenge was just too much ... It will be intersting
to see who will join Shelley on the race roster over the next months.
David participated in the 100 mile race in 2006. He did really
well placing fourth and enjoyed the experience so much that he decided
to go for the 300 miles in 2007.
By the way, this is an approach which I do recommend in case you
are uncertain about the 300 miles. In the past we have had quite
a few athletes who learned their lessons at the 100 mile race and
gained considerable confidence. With this preparation it is a lot
easier to succeed in the 300 mile race.
SPONSORS WANTED!
Once again, the Yukon Arctic Ultra is looking for sponsors. And
there are plenty of reasons why this is a great race to be involved
in as a sponsor. For one, its reputation and media coverage have
been excellent. For more detailed information on what packages are
available and our full sponsorship information package please check
our section for Sponsors on arcticultra.de.
Since the YAU now also has a sister race, the Yukon Gold Ultra
(www.goldultra.com) there is also the possibilty to get involved
in both a winter and summer event. Discounts on the sponsorship
fees are subject to negotiation.
For people who are able to help us in the search of a sponsor we
are more than happy to pay a commisson. If you need more information,
please contact Robert Pollhammer at info@thegreatoutdoors.de
Mike's trail report now complete
Those of you who read Mike Simon's report about his trip from Pelly
Crossing to Dawson City on the Quest Trail probably noticed that
it was only the first part. Now Mike completed his report. It focuses
less on describing the trail in detail. This you will find in Mike's
trail description in the arcticultra.de sub menu The Trail. However,
it is fun to read and has got a lot of interesting information in
it. You can download it in the News Update section (Update from
March 30th).
Additional information on Mandatory Gear for 460 mile race
Martin Like, YAU veteran and member of the organising team 05,
raised a very interesting question regarding the Mandatory Gear
for the 460 mile race. He was wondering if the additional gear for
the 460 mile race, i.e.
- Sat phone
- GPS
- Crampons or similar device
- Avalanche shovel
has to be carried from Pelly Farms onwards only? The answer is
"yes". This gear can be deposited in a drop bag. Regarding
Sat phones we will actually provide these at an affordable rate
from Pelly Farms onwards. However, if requested the phones can of
course be rented right from the beginning.
Best regards,
Robert Pollhammer
