Arkansas' first official stage race- 3 Days of
Syllamo
I wanted to acknowledge the tremendous job the race directors did
at the first annual 3 Days of Syllamo, held in Arkansas' Ozark National
Forest March 18-20. Steve Kirk and Roberta Orr (RDs) pulled off
with great style what I am pretty sure was the first paid-entry
multi-day running event in Arkansas (20K first day, 60K second day,
40K third day). Special congratulations to Magdalena Font and Paul
Schoenlaub, the overall female and male stage race winners (I hear
complete results will be at http://www.runarkansas.com in a few
days).
The 3 Days of Syllamo was a class-A event with an amazing list
of sponsors (Montrail, Patagonia, Hammer gel, Ozark Outdoor Supply,
Red Bull, just to name a few!). The reasonable $95.00 entry fee
more than paid for itself through all the cool gear we got just
for entering (capilene running shirt, running socks with race logo,
2 packets Hammergel, electrolyte pills, endurance drink mix, travel
coffee mug, button up finishers shirt, and then a long list of prizes
were given out at the post-race dinner). The overall stage race
winners each won $125.00 and a gift certificate for running shoes
while each day's stage race male and female winners won very nice
items such as headlamps, camelbacks, etc.- awards you can use!
I could go on and on but the best way to find out about how great
this race was is to come do it yourself in 2006 if Steve and Roberta
will put it back on (so far I hear they plan to! Web site: http://www.runarkansas.com/ThreeDaysSyllamo.htm).
Thanks also to all the great volunteers and the fellow runners
who came from distant parts of AR and other states to be part of
the mayhem. I hope to see everyone I met there back at next year's
Syllamo!
