It is with sadness that we note that Master athletics coach Arthur
Lydiard, who produced two Olympic champions and inspired generations
of New Zealanders to run, has died aged 87.
Lydiard died of a suspected heart attack today in a Texas hotel while
on a lecture tour of the United States.
Peter Snell and Sir Murray Halberg are his best-known proteges, but
Lydiard also inspired a generation of top New Zealand runners through
the late-1960s and 1970s, including Dick Tayler, Rod Dixon, Dick Quax
and 1976 Olympic 1500m champion John Walker.

Two supported speed attempts on the Pacific Crest Trail. David Horton
aka "The Runner" is going to attempt it starting June
4 from Campo. Ultrarunner, Catra Corbett, is planning on a start
at the same time as David so it will be interesting to see how they
both fare. The Applachian Trail is the usual venue for supported
speed attempts on big trails. Should be interesting
when the two runners hit the Sierra. The record for a non-supported
speed hike is 83 days. Horton is shooting for 63 days with support.
David at one time held the speed records for the 2165 mile Appalachian
Trail in 52 days 9 hours and the 270 mile Long Trail in 4 days 23
hours.

It seems there is a whole community of people running around the
planet. I'm late to this phenomena so I'm going to start a new page
for all these amazing people. Serge
Girard has been running across continents for several years.

Update from Across the Years
A limited number of 72-hour runners may still register for the race!
At most two or three more runners may register for the 72-hour
race, subject to approval of the race director (Paul Bonnett). If
you would like to run, (1) download the registration form, (2) email
Paul Bonnett notifying him of your intent to register. Paul will
give you the go-ahead to send in your registration form if it is
not too late.
There are still early start options for both 24-hour and for 48-hour
runners. We encourage you to consider registering for an early start.
