There has been plenty of chatter in the past year or two about “the best ultra shoe,” minimalist running shoes for ultras, barefoot running and the like.

I conducted (with the help of some other very experienced ultrarunners, including some who have finished the world’s longest certified race, the NY Self-Transcendence 3100 mile) a survey at the just-completed 6 and 10 day races. Ultralist members who were there racing, helping or spectating can attest that there was quite a variety of footwear!

Well-known gourmet Chef Sahishnu Szezcesiul, race director/ coordinator of ultras in Greater New York for 30+ years, opines that “the best shoe is whichever one gets the runner around the course the easiest, with the fewest complications.” For some runners this might be a minimalist 5-fingers or the like, for others the most heavily-cushioned control shoe made. Other multiday runners and I have found that what sometimes feels best in a super-long ultra on any hard surface (packed dirt being as hard as most any paved surface on which I have competed) is NOT the same as what feels the best in day-to-day training at home, where most runs are completed within 3 hours.

At this year’s New York multidays, I noted that Dr. Pedro (PhD. professor from Portugal) and the USA’s David Luljak (541 miles in 6 days, many other great ultra performances) started the 6 day with Vibram 5 Fingers. They both rotated to other very lightweight shoes, in Pedro’s case a pair of Barefoot Ted racers (I can attest, after competing with the nearby Tarahumaras off-and-on for the past 22 years, that they generally wear a much beefier, sturdy huarache than the Barefoot racer) and in David’s case the Mizuno Musha and the like.

Pedro was conducting personal research to go along with lab studies, and explained to me in both perfect English and Spanish (he speaks at least 5 languages) that when he went to regular running shoes (he had some basic neutral Brooks shoes) he immediately had blistering problems. For a muscular guy, Pedro had beautiful biomechanics and the minimalist shoes seemed to cause him few problems– but he was also doing in the 35-40 mile/ day range, as opposed to the lead runners who were up over 70 miles/ day.

I saw many, many pairs of racing/ lightweight training shoes, including on the fast feet of record-setting distaff runners Kaneenika Janakova and Dipali Cunningham. Many women, from Dipali and Kaneenika to my daughter, wife and some of the women race helpers had multiple pairs of the Saucony Kinivara/ Mirage. The bright orange, pink, and black with purple/ pink highlights all caught the eyes of spectators and runners. I found out later that the running shoppe closest to Flushing Meadows, Quantum Runners, had been ‘cleaned out” of these Saucony as well as the popular Nike Vomero/ Pegasus, adidas Supernova and various Mizuno models. As an aisde, at how many other ultras do runners send out for a new pair of shoes DURING the race?!

Running shoe historian Dharbhasana Jade Lynn, Esq., of Auckland, New Zealand (a veteran of the 3100 mile and husband of our AMAZING Chef Manager at the 6/ 10 day), observed that, while he enjoyed wearing racing flats for the first 25 days of last year’s 3100 mile, “they just don’t last, and end up costing a runner more money despite their lower prices.” (most good training shoes in the USA today go for $100-$110, whereas great racing flats can be had for $80). Dharbhasana also noted that many of the light racing shoes (such as the adidas Adios I TRIED wearing) are actually quite hard-soled.

One thing I was taken aback to learn from the many international runners at the Flushing Meadows event was that not only in Europe and Russia but also in Australia and New Zealand, running shoes are often TWICE (or more) the price of what we generally pay here. Thus former New York Tech U. track-star and current Quantum Running Manager Mo (nique) Blackwood explained to me, the day after the 10 day race, that even AFTER these race she had multiday runners coming in and buying shoes to take home (or in some cases, ordering them for when they return for the 3100 mile or late August’s Rockland Lake Marathon and Queens 47 Mile).

For anyone REALLY interested in shoe news, here is what I actually wore during the 544 miles I ran along the scenic shores of Meadow Lake:

–Saucony Fastwich racer– to about 60 miles (heel/ toe started unravelling)

–Asics DS-Trainer pair #1 (had about 200 miles on them already)– +-miles 61>132.

–Zoot Winkley racers (named for ultra record-setter Don Winkley)– +- miles 132>185 (wore through back edge of heel).

–Asics DS-Trainer #2 (had about 40 miles on them pre=race)– +-180> 230 miles.

–adidas Supernova 2011– 280>381 miles– A SHOCK– at home I find these shoes too heavy and bulky (except for hiking with a backpack), but in the 10 day they were great! I also wore them sockless for many miles, had no blistering problems but finally wanted a bit more cushion so put on wool sox).

–Miles 381>460– alternated between Saucony Mirage (great, but did not last) and Supernova. Tried adidas Adios for 2 miles, feet hurt too much even with thick insole.

–Miles 460>544 and post-race walking around town– Asics DS-Trainer sized 12 (half above normal size) that I had delivered during race!

This may sound like more shoes than one runner should need, but keep in mind I have run over 100,000 miles in my life, over 200 marathons/ ultras, and will be 52 years old on May 12. In my never-tiring youth I could race 24 hours in two pairs of light racing flats. As many great athletes have said, “If we don’t make some concessions to age, age will beat us down.”

FINALLY– there is a GREAT, historic multiday coming up Memorial Day weekend (started in the 1970s), the 3 Day PIONEER TREK that takes place in three different NYC parks (33.3 miles/ day– but you can do just one stage too) and is under the professional, enthusiastic direction of the USA’s most prolific ultra director in history– Richard Innamorato.

More on THAT famous multiday as well as the 3100 mile in an upcoming press release.

I ENCOURAGE all ultrarunners to try a multiday race– or go help out at one– at least once in their careers.

LAS VEGAS/EWORLDWIRE/Feb. 9, 2011 — The ePulse2, featuring the latest in fitness and personal monitoring technology, is changing the way people monitor their health by conveniently, continually and accurately providing users’ vital information on heart rate, target exercise heart rate zones and caloric burn rate without uncomfortable chest belts and complicated heart rate monitors.

The second generation industry-unique strapless optical heart rate monitoring technology from Impact Sports Technologies (http://www.impactsports.com) is revolutionizing the use of personal heart rate monitoring and is expanding it into new markets beyond pure health and fitness.

Impact Sports Technologies revolutionary new strapless heart rate monitor is simply worn on the forearm. Users put it on, turn it on, and immediately see their heart rate.

The ePulse2 features:

- A streamlined look and controls.
- An internal rechargeable battery.
- An industry-first full color, Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) graphical display that is sunlight readable and is self-illuminating for indoor or nighttime use.

The ePulse2 accurately gathers and displays heart rate and fitness data while being conveniently worn on the forearm or even on the wrist for many activities, permitting full mobility of the hands.

For the first time, runners, walkers, yoga participants, cyclists, spinners, tennis players and individuals just trying to count calories have a sensible means to monitor and receive instant feedback on fitness activities based on their heart rate.

Impact Sports Technologies has taken the lead in barrier-breaking continuous optical heart rate monitoring technology that has multiple market applications beyond fitness because it does not require a chest belt or any other action such as placing a finger on a sensor pad to receive a snapshot of heart rate.

The proprietary technology is being used by EA Sports in its Active 2 and Active 2 NFL Training Camp games.

Additional applications for the technology are also being developed for elderly monitoring, rehabilitation, and other special medical uses.

“The convenience and accuracy of our proprietary motion resistant optical heart rate monitoring technology has expanded its uses into gaming, personal monitoring and research fields by affording the benefits of accurate, continuous heart rate monitoring to a broader spectrum of users beyond those who exercise from home or at the gym and is now moving us into diverse worldwide markets for our technology,” said Don Brady, Impact Sports’ president and CEO.

The ePulse sells for $149.95 and is available through major Internet retailers and many retail sporting goods stores nationwide (see http://www.impactsports.com).

North Face have sent this information some time ago about packs. Since my recent trip to Colombia and running longer distances away from clean water supplies, I have become more interested in these items. I have no financial interest in North Face or any other such enterprise but I am interested in what people have to say about their favourite packs.
Please leave a comment if you are familiar with this product or if you have found something similar but better.

Flyweight Packing – Ion 20 and Escalada packs from The North Face

No longer do athletes stick rigidly to one discipline. Increasingly versatile sportsmen and women are switching from one fast moving activity to another – and expecting their equipment to do the same. Enter two new packs from The North Face which do just that – the Ion 20 and Escalada.

Perfect for running and biking, the Ion 20 is a very lightweight hydration compatible pack with an advanced EXO-LITE suspension system, as flexible and supportive as it is load bearing. The pack has stretch woven water bottle pockets and a padded hydration reservoir sleeve. The airmesh waistbelt sports a food pocket large enough for energy bars and combines with three point adjustment and a tuck away facility giving the user versatility whatever the activity. For fit and comfort, the Ion 20 features a dual-density airmesh shoulder harness with sliding, adjustable sternum strap. The specialised back panel disperses fluid volume, helping to eliminate discomfort caused when a full reservoir localises pressure and distorts the back panel.

The new Escalada is another pack capable of embracing multiple disciplines such as summer or winter days out on the hill, whether you are walking, climbing or enjoying a spot of Via Ferrata. Boasting an advanced X-Vent suspension system which gives a balance of rigidity and breathability, a mesh trampoline with anti-bulge backpanel ensures that the weight and discomfort of even the most bulky load is lifted off the athlete’s back. With a volume of 21 litres, the Escalada makes it easy to haul a load across multiple disciplines, offering an insulated hydration compartment, trekking pole/ice axe lash points and tool accessory loops, sliding sternum strap, removable/adjustable hipbelt and finally a tricot lined electronic accessories point for stashing your mobile or GPS.

> I have decided that I am going to do a multi day road adventure to see what they are like… I would like to ask those who have run with jogging/running strollers over long multi day events to let me know which strollers have been a success and which have not….

hello jetfuelburner,

I want to encourage you to do the run you are planning. Having done a lot of multi-day road stuff, up to two weeks at a time, I can tell you they are a lot of fun.

However, I think the stroller would be a mistake. No matter how well the stroller works out, it would still be a pain in the butt to drag it along day after day. I know, from experience, that you can easily carry everything you need in a fanny pack. I started to say a small fanny pack, but I’ve seen some postage stamp sized packs, and you need a little more than that.
When you are self-supported on the road, anything you carry that is not vitally necessary is a double penalty. First, you have to tote it all the way. Second, you have to deal with it every day. One penalty of carrying excess stuff is obvious – the weight, and the space it occupies. Less obvious is the nuisance of unpacking and repacking crap you aren’t using… every day.
You wont use as much stuff as you think. After you spend the whole day running, and then do all the required foot travel to feed & restock supplies, etc, there isn’t going to be but just enough time left to rest.
In my experience, watching 30 minutes or an hour of TV before going to sleep is about the most non-required-to-run time you will get (at least if you plan to cover any ground) and some days you wont even get adequate time to sleep, since the length of each days run depends a lot on where the next place is to overnight.

You can opt to spend some nights alongside the road (I recommend cemeteries or church lawns), but you will find that life without bathrooms & showers is not near as much fun.

Over the years I have pretty well figured out what I require and what I don’t. I consider it a success to travel for a week or more carrying about 5 pounds of stuff, and finishing without any item in my pack that I did not use, and not ever needing anything I did not have.
Although I have not been past a couple of weeks, I believe that I could go indefinitely with the supplies I carry.

If you take a stroller full of stuff, you will spend your trip acting as a slave to all the un-necessary material, and it is supposed to be a vacation for you, not for your running gear.

laz

Sounds like you got it pretty down to an art and science. Tell us what the typical contents of your running pack was that added up to approx. 5 lbs?

I and I’ll bet many others would like to “Run in your Foot Steps” )

Came across an interesting article via Ultra Adventures by Orthopaedic surgeon Joseph Froncioni on athletic footware and running injuries which lays a case for spending time unshod to help the feet naturally develop their strength and resilience. Also looks a little closer at the shoe manufacturers and the correlation with running injuries and expensive shoes.

“The authors conclude that running injury rates are greatest in users of the most expensive shoes because advertising has deceived these users into believing that the shoes provide a superior level of safety thereby inducing an attenuation of impact moderating behavior, increasing impact and injury.”
