    Together We Run

    August 23, 2007 at 1:12 pm

John Wallace III recently finished a trans-USA crossing and now his parents have embarked on a campaign of their own, already on Day 46.

    John writes:
Many of you may be independently receiving emails from my folks but if not I wanted to get this out before they are into their fourth state.

They are clipping along at about 16 miles per day and are almost into Kentucky with their longest state, Illinois, in the rear view mirror. I couldn’t be prouder at their perseverance and positive attitude as the weather has been either rainy or muggy for many of the days on the road. They have spent almost 70% of the time sleeping in their tent through all sorts of hot and rainy conditions meeting all sorts of great folks in the process. (more…)

Dean Karnazes Bails on the Road

Today’s post on Dean Karnazes blog details his decision to fly back home to Calfornia:

    SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Last month, in New York City, I made a fairly insane and irrational decision, to run across the country. Today, I made a very sane and rational decision, to go to the beach. (more…)

Long ultra quote (and you think you’re an extreme runner!): There is an order of Buddhist monks in Japan whose practice is running. They are called the Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei. They begin running at one-thirty A.M. and run from eighteen to twenty-five miles per night, covering several of Mount Hiei’s most treacherous slopes. (more…)

    Dean Karnazes finishes 50/50/50

Dean Karnazes completed his epic journey of running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days with a 3 hour performance at the New York City Marathon yesterday with an official time of 3:00:30. Like Sam Thompson, who ran 51/50/50 and finished August 19, Karnazes, 44, has demostrated clearly that running long distance on a regular basis is not only possible but within the capability of many people. Of course it requires training, determination and perseverance but these are human qualities not superhuman.
Karnazes said that he had reached his goal of raising $100,000 for Karno Kids -  a foundation he created to benefit youth-fitness programs.
In two weeks Karnazes will be running in the American 24 hour Championships at the Ultracentric in Texas and with such a solid training base will be looking for a good performance.

    World Run 2

Jesper Olsen, keen to get back out on the road is planning another feat of running longevity.

“The route will in general lead from the Northern point of Scandinavia and in Europe to the Southern tip of Africa. After this first half of the total challenge is completed the run reverses direction and, hopefully, continues North from the Southern tip of South America to the Northern point of New Foundland in Canada, North America.” (more…)

So begins yesterdays posting on Deans Blog. Already it seems, Dean is finding patterns in his experience. Reading his blog today gives me a similar feeling to what I experienced when running with Jesper Olsen last year - that of making connections with the running community and help create something that is much bigger than any individual can create.

Today the run is in Boulder CO and tommorrow in Casper,WY

    Inside My Heart

In February of 1985 my father died and for the next 10 months I went into a very quiet and serious place. During this time I did not run that much, though I later felt that it would have helped me a lot, practicing my spiritual life did. (more…)

It took her 439 days to kayak and bike around U.S.

    By JON NAITO
    P-I REPORTER

Renata Chlumska paddled into Moss Bay to a hero’s welcome Friday — friends draped in flags of her native Sweden, others waving miniflags, holding signs, clapping loudly, holding champagne bottles waiting to be popped.

After 439 days circumnavigating the continental United States — thought to be the first time this was accomplished — kayaking through ocean swells, biking through desert conditions, witnessing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Chlumska was overjoyed to have reached her journey’s end. (more…)
