Exercise Induced Asthma – an Ultra Runners Perspective
By Neil L. Cook, Head Multisport Coach, Asphalt Green, NYC, NY, USA

I never had a problem through years of running. Gradually through the late 90’s I started to feel “out of shape” when I went out to run. A tightness in my chest, an inability to push my body. I went for allergy and pulmonary testing. I had some minor allergies and was given medication for them - mostly dust and animal dander. My pulmonary function as tested was down, so I started using Singulair, Advair and Maxair. There was a minor improvement. When I was retested my pulmonary function was above average. But, the problem persisted - many times when I went to run I felt a tightness in my chest, and an inability to push, like I was out of shape. I looked forward to the traffic lights being red on the way to the park! (more…)

Essay on Athletic Footware and Running Injuries

    March 3, 2007 at 4:58 pm

by Abichal in Equipment, Footcare, Injuries

Came across an interesting article via Ultra Adventures by Orthopaedic surgeon Joseph Froncioni on athletic footware and running injuries which lays a case for spending time unshod to help the feet naturally develop their strength and resilience. Also looks a little closer at the shoe manufacturers and the correlation with running injuries and expensive shoes. (more…)

Guest Blogger - Dr. Mitch Proffman - Unnecessary Knee Surgery

    December 18, 2006 at 12:43 pm

by Mitch in Guest Blogger, Health, Injuries, Treatment

My main focus this month is on a very disturbing news item. There is a surgical arthroscopic procedure that is done 100,000 times a year, costing more than $1 billion dollars a year. It is arthroscopic knee surgery, that is done basically to “clean” up arthritis and debris from years of pounding. The assumption made by the authors is that this procedure is useless. (more…)

    Subject: waterproof socks

I usually wear Injinji socks when running, and have had much success with no
blisters and comfort….does anyone who runs trails where water is
encountered wear a waterproof sock, similar to what duck hunters wear. If
so, would you wear these over your normal socks…or until Injinji makes a
    waterproof crew sock…. (more…)

Subject: Nutrition/Fueling at the End of a 100 miler

All this talk about how many calories per hour we can/should take in during a 100 miler has me pondering a quote I saw from Anton Krupicka in the October 2006 Ultrarunning magazine. In response to his nutrition plan for Leadville, he mentioned toward the end of this section that, “The last two hours in from Mayqueen I basically stopped eating and drinking. I was afraid of my stomach becoming upset again, plus, especially the last hour or so, I became very focused on just running fast and getting to the finish. Not eating at that stage didn’t seem to affect me too adversely.” (more…)

Inexpensive Orthotics Worth Trying - From ‘Happy Feet’

    November 21, 2006 at 7:17 pm

    by Abichal in Footcare

    Ignorance is bliss.
    Sometimes.
But often it’s just a problem waiting to manifest. Running a multiday race is a sure way to bring issues with weaknesses and foot problems to the fore. Collapsed arches or metatarsal muscles are the foot’s way of showing us that we’ve pushed too far in the present circumstances and these areas need more support. That support needn’t be expensive though it may be indicative of a longer term problem that needs sorting. John Vonhof, in his blog Happy Feet, offers some alternatives. (more…)

Triathletes, cyclists, and hardcore Ashtangis are among the new crop of athletes proving that a vegan diet can be a winning one.

    Page: 1 2 3 4

When Scott Jurek, 32, of Seattle fuels up for a 50-mile ultramarathon, he reaches for a smoothie made with pears, bananas, apples, spirulina, and avocado. A mighty bowl of pasta, sauced with garlic and olive oil and brimming with fresh veggies, is the night-before-racing favorite of professional cyclist Christine Vardaros, 36, of Mill Valley, California. Triathlete Ruth Heidrich, 71, of Honolulu opts for a salad of greens with papaya, mango, bananas, and berries before setting out for a competition.

One thing you won’t find on these athletes’ grocery lists is meat, eggs, or dairy products. Jurek, Vardaros, and Heidrich are vegan. And if you think a vegan diet would compromise their physically demanding pursuits, just check out their performances: Jurek holds the course record in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile trail race through rugged terrain. Vardaros is ranked no. 32 in the world in cycling, and Heidrich has won 900 medals in running events.
