    Gastro-Intestinal problems in Endurance Training and Competition?

    It’s well known that large numbers of athletes suffer some form of gastro-intestinal (GI) disturbance during endurance events. In some long events GI problems can affect over 50% of the competitors. While this article has been written mainly for the benefit competitors in Endurance Sports and Ultra-Distance Events, it may be useful to anyone undertaking extreme forms of physical training and competition. We will look at some of the common GI complaints faced by those involved in endurance training and competition, consider a series of easy to implement strategies to assess and control such problems and then ask how GI complaints arise and most importantly, look at what we can do to solve these issues and improve performance.

    The boxing gym in Hercules Road is crammed into railway arches behind Waterloo station and the rumble of trains going overhead every minute or so sounds like the hunger pangs of an underfed giant sleeping in the room next door. Boxers are notoriously picky about food in a sport where weight is such an issue, and Tom Freije, former British Universities middleweight champion, is no exception. Here for a Saturday-morning workout, Freije is summing up fellow students’ attitudes to sports snacks: ‘On the rowing squad, in the rugby team, amongst the boxers, there are PhD biochemists, there are physiologists, there are people doing neurology doctorates. These guys are really knowledgable about food and nutrition, they do a lot of research on the internet. And, yes, they do use energy bars for a boost before a workout.’

    All this talk about how many calories per hour we can/should take in during a 100 miler has me pondering a quote I saw from Anton Krupicka in the October 2006 Ultrarunning magazine. In response to his nutrition plan for Leadville, he mentioned toward the end of this section that, “The last two hours in from Mayqueen I basically stopped eating and drinking. I was afraid of my stomach becoming upset again, plus, especially the last hour or so, I became very focused on just running fast and getting to the finish. Not eating at that stage didn’t seem to affect me too adversely.” (more…)

    Scott Jurek - Spartathlon 2006 Winner - Vegan Athlete

    Triathletes, cyclists, and hardcore Ashtangis are among the new crop of athletes proving that a vegan diet can be a winning one.

    When Scott Jurek, 32, of Seattle fuels up for a 50-mile ultramarathon, he reaches for a smoothie made with pears, bananas, apples, spirulina, and avocado. A mighty bowl of pasta, sauced with garlic and olive oil and brimming with fresh veggies, is the night-before-racing favorite of professional cyclist Christine Vardaros, 36, of Mill Valley, California. Triathlete Ruth Heidrich, 71, of Honolulu opts for a salad of greens with papaya, mango, bananas, and berries before setting out for a competition.

    One thing you won’t find on these athletes’ grocery lists is meat, eggs, or dairy products. Jurek, Vardaros, and Heidrich are vegan. And if you think a vegan diet would compromise their physically demanding pursuits, just check out their performances: Jurek holds the course record in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile trail race through rugged terrain. Vardaros is ranked no. 32 in the world in cycling, and Heidrich has won 900 medals in running events.
