    Anger slows healing process after injury

    PARIS (AFP) - The adage that laughter is the best medicine has been backed by an unusual investigation which says that people who seethe with anger take longer to recover from injury.

    Previous studies have linked ill tempered behaviour, whether brow-beating or road rage, with higher incidence of coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke, especially among men.

    But the new study, published on Wednesday in the British journal Brain, Behaviour, Immunity, is the first controlled experiment that directly measures the impact of ire on the healing process.e

    Tendons and Antibiotics

    There has been some discussion of this topic on the Ultralist over the past year or so as I recall and this article was recently posted on Ultra Adventures.

    Injuries tend to beget more injuries. I’ve had kidney stones for quite a while. Last March I went on a trailing run with Mark Long and Rich Sexton, and we ran out of water for 15 miles or so, and got severely dehydrated. (more…)

    Came across an interesting article via Ultra Adventures by Orthopaedic surgeon Joseph Froncioni on athletic footware and running injuries which lays a case for spending time unshod to help the feet naturally develop their strength and resilience. Also looks a little closer at the shoe manufacturers and the correlation with running injuries and expensive shoes. (more…)

    My main focus this month is on a very disturbing news item. There is a surgical arthroscopic procedure that is done 100,000 times a year, costing more than $1 billion dollars a year. It is arthroscopic knee surgery, that is done basically to “clean” up arthritis and debris from years of pounding. The assumption made by the authors is that this procedure is useless. (more…)
