Hinson Lake 24-Hour Classic
September 29-30, 2007
-As seen through the eyes of El Brad
Short version:
El Brad (EB) won with 115.52 miles.
Longer verison:
It was a dark and stormy night…well, ok, it wasn’t anything like that. It was actually a very nice day – for sitting on the beach (or by the lake fishing in the shade, I suppose for running too, whatever.)
I’ll begin by saying I am a really big fan of the Mangum Track Club. I have been ever since Mr. Long invited me down for a shirt run waaaaay back in 2002 on one of the Crowder’s sadistic loops. I can’t think of any members that I don’t like, a lot, but there is a core group that I’ve known for a while that I really enjoy being around. Fortunately for me, they don’t seem to mind me too much either, so it works out well. RD Tom (or RDT for the rest of the story – sounds like Paul Harvey, no?) falls into this elite category. (more…)
Exercise Induced Asthma – an Ultra Runners Perspective
By Neil L. Cook, Head Multisport Coach, Asphalt Green, NYC, NY, USA
I never had a problem through years of running. Gradually through the late 90’s I started to feel “out of shape” when I went out to run. A tightness in my chest, an inability to push my body. I went for allergy and pulmonary testing. I had some minor allergies and was given medication for them - mostly dust and animal dander. My pulmonary function as tested was down, so I started using Singulair, Advair and Maxair. There was a minor improvement. When I was retested my pulmonary function was above average. But, the problem persisted - many times when I went to run I felt a tightness in my chest, and an inability to push, like I was out of shape. I looked forward to the traffic lights being red on the way to the park! (more…)

Six weeks after making a winning ultra marathon debut in the New York Knickerbocker 60K, Ireland’s Dara O’Kearney won his second ultra, the Schinnen Fat Ass 50K, in the Netherlands on January 6th. (more…)
My main focus this month is on a very disturbing news item. There is a surgical arthroscopic procedure that is done 100,000 times a year, costing more than $1 billion dollars a year. It is arthroscopic knee surgery, that is done basically to “clean†up arthritis and debris from years of pounding. The assumption made by the authors is that this procedure is useless. (more…)
Challenge
An athlete I’m working with is in the final few weeks of preparation for the UltraMan in Hawaii - three days of triathlon, 10 Km swim and 90 miles of cycling on day one. Day two is 171.4 miles of cycling! Day three is 52.4 miles of running!
As expected, she’s having some doubts. Who wouldn’t when faced with such a challenge. (more…)

Todays Guest Blogger is Jay Bizarri who ran the Equalizer 24 hour Race Gray’s Lake Park, Des Moines, Iowa October 15 & 16 2005. Having run the distance before, Jay wanted to build on his previous experience and enjoy his race.
The Equalizer experience for me was a personal best, even though I didn’t reach the magical number of 100 miles that I would like to achieve someday. My approach this time around was based on experiences from my first two attempts. (more…)

Inside My Heart
In February of 1985 my father died and for the next 10 months I went into a very quiet and serious place. During this time I did not run that much, though I later felt that it would have helped me a lot, practicing my spiritual life did. (more…)
