OROBIE SKYRAID DOESN’T STOP, IT DOUBLES!
The 2011 Skyrunning diary has organized two International events in Bergamo. The creator of these events is ex-Skyrunner Mario Poletti. The fifth edition of Orobie Skyraid will be on Sunday 17th July; this competition will be a single test around Presolana mountain. The Orobie Vertical competition will be on June 2nd and will start from Valbondione, finishing at Refuge Coca.
Bergamo, 15.02.2011 – In the Skyrunning world competition, the Orobie Skyraid has carved out a leading role thanks to a big contingent of international athletes and to an extraordinary stage that is the path of Orobie. For those who love racing through the clouds, these competitions represent a challenge because of the extreme difficulty of the route, while providing an extraordinary opportunity to compete in an unique setting such as the Prealpi Orobiche. This competition was born after the record of Mario Poletti, who stopped the clock at 8:52’31”. After this record the competition became an international showcase, and has twice hosted the world Skyrunning cup FSA.
In order to give the Bergamo sport movement a new dimension, the organizers of FLY-UP SPORT are looking to the future with new initiatives; the two competitions in 2011 are proof. The discipline of running draws many people who prefer high mountain trails instead of traffic roads.
First of all the date – the fifth edition of the Orobie Skyraid will be on Sunday 17th July and will not be a relay. In order to avoid the problems created by the construction of teams of three athletes (many people give up the competition due to the lack of friends who don’t want to test themselves through the 48km of the Orobie trail) it was decided to transform it into a single test. Of course the route will be different with a fascinating course; “The new version of Orobie Skyraid will be around Presolana mountain” said Mario Poletti, responsible for the organisation. “We have designed a high altitude route of about 25km which we are sure that every athlete (from professional to amateur) could do.”
The Headquarters of the event will be located on the plains of Donico, near Presolana. Here the competition will start and finish. But that’s not all. FLY-UP SPORT will organize an innovative and captivating “prologue”. On June 2nd they will unwind the first edition of Orobie Vertical. This race will start from Valbondione, through the number 301 paths and after 1000m altitude gain will finish at the Coca Refuge. Mario Poletti said, “We decided to introduce this race in order to launch the Orobie Skyraid, but also because many people asked for a Vertical km race uphill, and we are sure that both the events will have the consensus of all the fans.”
In collaboration with CAI Bergamo, the first edition of Orobie Vertical will be titled as Memorial Fausto Bossetti, a 51 year-old mountain lover that disappeared last January. These two events will be valid for Orobie SkyComb; whoever participates in both races, will be automatically entered into the special results.
