Subject: Sunrise2Sunset Relay results
Hello Ultralisters,
I don’t know if these results will be posted anywhere, so here’s an unofficial results report on the Sunrise2Sunset Relay race held last eekend, April 12-14. Three entrants in the Solo team category attempted to cover the 170-mile course from Jensen Beach, Florida (on the east coast) across the state to Fort Myers (on the west coast). The objective was to finish sometime between 1 and 5 p.m. Saturday affternoon, and teams were given starting times based on their projected pace. About 25 six- and/or twelve-person teams also ran in various categories.
Mike Melton, 49, of Jensen Beach started at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning April 12th and finished Saturday afternoon at 4:29 p.m. for a total time of 64 hours, 29 minutes, 23 seconds.
Dante Ciolfi of Fort Myers started at 6:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon and finished Sunday morning April 15th around 7:00 a.m. for a total time of 61 hours or so. Exact finishing time is not known as of this writing.
Hung-Kwong Ng of Orlando started at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning and DNF’ed at 65 miles after struggling with the heat.
The biggest factor in the race (IMHO) was the blazing sun beating down on the runners each afternoon, coupled with temperatures in the mid- to high-90’s. Traffic on the rural roads was a nuisance at times, but all in all it was a fun experience that led to some great stories. I hope to write a proper race report soon.
