However the sad news is that one of the runners passed away this morning. This is posted on the site.

” It is with deep sadness that Race Director Patrick Bauer and all the organisation of MARATHON DES SABLES informs you of the death of Bernard Julé from France, N°53, today 29.03.07 at 06H35.
Bernard Julé was found unconscious by his tent-mates at 6H30 this morning. The organisation’s medical team was called immediately and confirmed his death.
c had run a good course from the beginning. He had sought no medical aid and his medical file showed no risk factor.

According to his tent-mates, Bernard had run the 70km long stage well, finishing at 18h30 yesterday. He arrived in very good spirits. At 3H30 this morning he woke up to welcome his mates back to the bivouac.

Patrick Bauer, the organisation and the competitors extend their warmest sympathy to Bernard’s family and friends.

A minute’s silence was held on the bivouac.”
